Built for Connection Bishop Vincent Mathews
Built for Connection | Bishop Vincent Mathews
You were never designed to do life alone.
In Built for Connection, Bishop Vincent Mathews teaches that isolation is not strength. God created us for covenant community, accountability, fellowship, and relationships that help us become who He designed us to be.
Genesis 2:18 gives the first “not good” in Scripture:
“It is not good that man should be alone.”
This was before sin, death, brokenness, or dysfunction entered the world.
Adam had perfect fellowship with God, yet God still declared that isolation was not good.
That means spiritual strength does not eliminate our need for people.
In this message:
• Why being alone is different from being single
• Why marriage is not the only answer to loneliness
• The importance of covenant community
• Why pets, screens, AI, work, and entertainment cannot replace human relationships
• How isolation affects emotional and physical health
• Proverbs 18:1 and the progression from separation to craving to rage
• Why isolated people become more vulnerable to deception
• How predators, abusers, manipulators, and scammers use isolation as a strategy
• Why accountability protects us
• The importance of intergenerational relationships
• Why singles should date in healthy community
• How healthy churches function as a defense system
• How to support people walking through grief and crisis
• Why men especially must resist withdrawing when life becomes difficult
• The biblical power of koinonia: fellowship, partnership, participation, and shared life
Isolation does more than remove people.
It removes witnesses.
It removes correction.
It removes perspective.
It removes accountability.
And when you become your only counselor, your own desires can become your only authority.
Proverbs 18:1 warns:
“A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; he rages against all wise judgment.”
God did not design us to be independent.
He designed us to be interdependent.
We need people who can encourage us.
People who can correct us.
People who can sit with us when life hurts.
People who can ask the real questions.
People who can help us see what we cannot see ourselves.
The animal beside you can be a blessing.
The screen can be a useful tool.
Technology can help us communicate.
But none of them can replace genuine human connection.
You were built for connection.
This week:
Give someone permission to ask you the real questions.
Visit a senior.
Learn the name of a young person.
Check on someone who has become distant.
And if life has become heavy and you have started withdrawing, come back into community.
You were never meant to carry everything alone.
