Who Told you Reclaiming an Identity that you did not Invent Bishop Vincent Mathews
Who Told You? Reclaiming an Identity You Did Not Invent | Bishop Vincent Mathews
Who told you who you are?
In Who Told You? Reclaiming an Identity You Did Not Invent, Bishop Vincent Mathews teaches from Genesis 3:11 and challenges us to examine the voices, labels, experiences, diagnoses, expectations, and cultural messages that have shaped how we see ourselves.
After Adam and Eve sinned, God asked Adam a piercing question:
“Who told you that you were naked?”
Adam’s body had not changed.
His identity had not changed.
What changed was his perception of himself.
Someone else had spoken, and Adam accepted a definition that God had never given him.
IN THIS MESSAGE:
• Genesis 3 and the question “Who told you?”
• Why the enemy attacks identity before behavior
• The difference between what God declares and what culture labels
• Why the serpent offered Adam and Eve something they already possessed
• Being made in the image of God
• Jesus confronting identity attacks in the wilderness
• “If You are the Son of God” and the trap of performance
• Why you do not have to prove what God has already declared
• How power, culture, family, school, and society can place names on us
• Why diagnosis should describe a condition, not become your identity
• The difference between “I have” and “I am”
• How advertising manufactures deficiency
• Romans 12 and resisting the mold of the world
• Naomi calling herself Mara, while God continued calling her Naomi
• Why looking inside yourself is not enough to discover identity
• Finding your identity in Christ
• What it means to be bought with a price
• Isaiah 43 and being called by God’s name
• Revelation 2 and the new name God promises to the overcomer
The enemy’s strategy has not changed.
He convinces people they do not possess what God has already given them.
You are not valuable because someone validates you.
You are not beautiful because someone notices you.
You are not important because people applaud you.
You are not worthy because of a degree, title, career, relationship, income, or appearance.
Your identity comes from the One who created you.
A diagnosis can describe what you are carrying without defining who you are.
You may have anxiety.
You are not anxiety.
You may battle depression.
You are not depression.
You may struggle with addiction.
That struggle does not get the final word over your life.
Your worst season does not get naming rights.
Your past does not own you.
Culture does not own you.
The accuser does not own you.
You are not your own.
You were bought with a price.
When the enemy questions your identity, you do not have to argue.
Answer the way Jesus answered:
“It is written.”
Who told you?
And did they actually have the authority to name you?
